Yashima the Hallowed or why I hate the Sinister Squashling

From Screens 2010

I did not play much over the summer but I started again sometime in September. I have transferred another 2 characters to Kil’jaeden and I have started playing my little rogue named “Greenmamba” who is fully equipped with all the heirlooms I could afford.

With patch 4.01 I assumed that glyphs would yield high returns one last time after the patch and I made a huge bunch and put them up the evening before the patch and I was right. Prices are still way up. Raking in gold has always been fun somehow and I am rich … getting to know the new server economy was really the hardest part in a way.

Then came the annual Halloween event. This is the third year that I was trying to finish up “What a long strange trip it’s been. I finished children’s week only this year as well so last year the pressure was not yet “up”. This year the last part I was missing was the ‘Sinister Squashling’ (I am also a minipet collector so this was especially insulting). Then I noticed the Hallowed Helm part was also reset. I guess I trashed the Helm and for some reason … so I started on the Headless Horseman remembering that last year I should have kept going there more often. While it was much easier getting a group for the Horseman through the Dungeon Finder there was only 1 chance per day for the pet.

Last year I was trick or treating like mad and this year again my days turned into increments of hours when the debuff was gone. I kept logging in as often as possible. I planned other activities in such a way that I would not miss one chance to trick or treat. I put out fires and decapitated the Headless Horseman countless times in hopes of seeing the pet drop. A week of this passed. I was tired and desperate. There was too much time put into the whole trip thing already to give up.

I was hating the game, hating the achievement, hating myself for ever having let myself become involved in this part of it. (I really hated all the holidays because of their short duration and me letting myself be forced to complete the achievements related to them).

So when first the helm and then the pet popped up a couple of days ago, I was not happy. I was only relieved that it was over.

In relation to real life there is something I’ve been trying to achieve for a while. I’ve worked hard and I invested too much time into this to give up. It seems like my goal is never getting closer and I have as much influence on the outcome as with the Sinister Squashling. If I ever get what I want, I know I will feel exactly the same. I will feel “glad it’s over”.
